Off Shore Wind Turbines

by Paul Kay on April 8, 2009

turbine sketchInterior Secretary Ken Salazar says that wind turbines placed off the east coast could replace most of the coal fired power plants in the USA.

Ocean winds could generate 1 million megawatts which is about equal to 3,000 medium sized coal fired power plants. We already have the technology to build the wind turbines and plant them in the ocean but it would take a huge number of the turbines to take the coal fired plants offline as the average wind turbine produces about 2 to 5 megawatts. Do the math yourself.

The Brass Monkey Blog feels that there is no time like the present to start construction. Remember do not be daunted by the huge number of wind turbines that would have to be built and take it one step at a time and in the meantime use conventional means (coal, nuclear and gas). Let us not forget the great potential of solar either, especially in the southwest.
