US Reluctantly signs the Bali Climate Agreement

0

The United States Saturday voiced “serious concerns” about a deal reached at the UN climate conference in Bali, emphasizing the need for major developing countries to be included in greenhouse gas emissions targets.

In a statement following the end of the global conference, where the United States found itself isolated in battling against new emissions goals for developed countries, the White House renewed its call for emissions targets for countries like China and India.

And it said that any new agreement to succeed the UN Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012, must acknowledge a country’s sovereign right to pursue economic growth and energy security. See the full artical from AFP here. To the Brass Monkey the above part

any new agreement to succeed the UN Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012, must acknowledge a country’s sovereign right to pursue economic growth and energy security.

translates to ok yeah we will continue try and protect the environment as long as it does not interfere with industry. This reminds me of a city council meeting that took place in Anchorage Alaska about 30 years ago. A business was trying to get a permit to run an incinerator and there was an environmental issue brought up. The response of one councilmen was this

I am all for protecting the environment as long as it does not interfere with business.

This type of mentality is taking the planet and our quality of life on a down-hill slide. Sooner or later folks we ALL must be prepared to make some sacrifices.
