Web Browser Text Rendering

Web Browser LogosAny reviews for web browsers seem to concentrate on speed and or security. Neither will be addressed here.

What will be mentioned here is text rendering. You made have heard of anti-aliasing, which is a smoothing of text that you see when you go to different web pages. In a nutshell it takes the jaggies out of text. It is not a subtle difference either. I loaded the same page in IE, Firefox, Opera, Chrome and Safari and switched back and forth between them.

The clear winners were IE and Safari. In IE the text was very crisp and readable and in Safari, WOW, it seemed to just jump out at you. Safari is the only one of the above mentioned browsers that has four different options in what they call font smoothing for you to pick from. Best for CRT Monitors (cathode ray tube), light, medium for flat screen monitors and strong.

As far as text on the web Safari is the hands down winner with Internet Explorer coming in second.

Safari supports plug-ins but they most be signed by the author and with Apples hands on control of everything (uber geeks hate this) as far as the plug-ins go this could be a good thing. It will help keep the pranksters at bay.
